This article examines the development, foundational framework, and practical applications of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) while considering its variations across countries and cultural contexts. The primary aim of SEL is to equip students with the ability to integrate their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to navigate life's challenges effectively. SEL is commonly structured around five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Educators can adapt these competencies into diverse teaching strategies to meet students' needs. Implementing SEL requires a multi-layered and systematic approach, which is challenging given educational contexts' varied and complex demands. To address these challenges and support the future growth of SEL, this study offers three key recommendations: 1. Developing innovative, classroomlevel SEL curricula aligned with local needs and characteristics, which will provide students with meaningful learning experiences. 2. Establishing school-level SEL ecological networks by fostering strong partnerships among educators, families, and communities to create a collaborative and supportive system. 3. Designing nationallevel SEL development plans by integrating resources from government departments such as education, social welfare, and public health to ensure comprehensive support for SEL implementation across regions and schools. These strategies promote students' holistic development, including physical and mental well-being, while supporting their ability to thrive in society. In doing so, this work contributes to realizing the vision of a ''Healthy Taiwan'' through systemic and sustained efforts in SEL. |
