Sports psychology research has expanded markedly in both scope and target populations over the past decade. To examine the current research hotspots and identify emerging research topics in sports psychology, this study employed bibliometric analysis using the Content Analysis Toolkit for Academic Research software to analyze 6,135 articles published between 2013 and 2023 from 7 representative journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. Based on the publication volume and growth trajectories of each cluster, along with expert consensus evaluation, research hotspots and emerging research topics were identified. The results indicated that research institutions from Europe, the United States, and Canada contributed the largest proportion of research output in this field. The keyword analysis identified physical activity, mental health, and older adults as the predominant research foci. Among the 13 identified research clusters, three emerged as research hotspots:‘exercise and cognitive psychology research,’‘motor and cognitive development in children,’and‘analyses of motor control.’Three clusters were identified as emerging research topics:‘exercise and cognitive psychology research,’‘psychological dynamics of team interactions in sports,’and‘psychological and environmental factors in competitive soccer settings.’Notably,‘exercise and cognitive psychology research,’‘visual and gait analysis,’and‘analyses of motor control’demonstrated both high publication volume and positive growth trajectories, positioning them as simultaneously research hotspots and emerging research topics. These findings revealed that sports psychology research has evolved from traditional competitive sports psychology toward broader health promotion applications. The results provide strategic guidance for research prioritization within the academic community in Taiwan. |
