This study uses Southern Min as its primary material, combining perspectives from dialects, literature, and comparative studies of phonological rules among different dialects to investigate the Chinese etymology of six words in Southern Min that convey the meaning of“loose.”For words with the meaning of“loose”in Southern Min, the initials and main vowels are the same, but the codas and tones differ: lɔ6, lɔ3, and lɔk8. Through the examination of historical literature, analysis of cognate words, diachronic comparison, and synchronic comparison, this study finds that both phonological correspondences and semantic connections, as well as the tonal evolution in Southern Min, indicate that the original character for lɔ6, lɔ3, and lɔk8 should be“摝.”Additionally, this paper documents field survey data to illustrate ongoing phonological changes. |
