This study examines the concept of“island defense”and its development within the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), which has been responsible for Japan's territorial defense, from 2004—when the concept first gained attention—until the present. Focusing on the unique yet geographically extensive island terrain of Japan, this research explores the evolution of both the“software”(strategic designs such as the National Defense Program Guidelines) and“hardware”(force and equipment development based on these strategies). The study uses two key milestones as examples for comprehensive evaluation: the 2013 National Defense Program Guidelines and the establishment of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade in 2018, which represent the core of the current island defense strategy. By analyzing the strategic considerations, evolutionary processes, and force structure implementation across various stages, this research identifies the strategic significance, strengths, and weaknesses of these developments. Ultimately, it aims to clarify the origins and progression of the island defense concept within the overall strategy of the JSDF. |
