The episodes in The Journey to the West follow the theme of“obtaining the Scriptures from the West.”With the same characters repeatedly facing similar challenges, narrative inconsistencies are inevitable unless carefully edited. These contradictions arise when viewing the novel as a whole, though each episode remains self-contained. Without a known pre-text for comparison, scholars analyze the novel in its entirety rather than by episode, complicating its evaluation. The lack of a clear source makes it difficult to determine whether these conflicts stem from the book’s formation or editorial choices. This paper examines three episodes to explore whether these contradictions allow for reasonable interpretation and investigates their underlying causes, proposing a theory on how and why they occur. |
