This study aims to explore how Taiwanese comic artists utilize visual symbols of humor and satire to create political cartoons, and how political cartoons function as a visual language to effectively convey political criticism. Through in-depth interviews with four comic artists with different styles and creative backgrounds, and by analyzing textual cases they provided, combined with literature theory, the main techniques of humor and satire are revealed. These techniques include character design, symbolism and metaphor, timeliness, multi-level interpretation, visual language, and narrative structure's theoretical framework. The study found that character design and symbolism/metaphor are crucial techniques for achieving humor and satire, while the design of timeliness and multi-level interpretation makes political cartoons a diverse and open platform for political discussion. The study concludes that political cartoons, through creative visual art expressions, successfully reveal the role of visual symbols in political criticism. The results of this study provide reference directions and insights for the creation of political cartoons. |
