This study is based on the relevant study conducted by the researcher in 2020 regarding the analysis of the selection and usage of three-character (trisyllabic) idioms, as well as recommendations for textbook compilation. It aims to use this as a foundation for instructional design. The objective of the study is to discuss through a teaching experiment whether the instructional methods designed in this study can enhance the ability of Chinese language learners to understand and apply three-character idioms. This study involves 35 intermediate to advanced Chinese language learners as participants. It utilizes pre-test and post-test assessments, questionnaire surveys, interviews, and classroom observation logs as research tools. The study conducted an experiment comprising 8 instructional sessions over 4 weeks to investigate whether the methods proposed in this article can improve students' comprehension and application of three-character idioms. After the experiment, we found that the average post-test scores were all higher than the average pre-test scores. Within the 95% confidence interval, the pairwise difference t-values of the four test results showed significant differences (p < .05). The questionnaire and interview results indicate that the students highly support the instructions proposed in this study, demonstrating that these instructions can effectively improve their understanding of three-character idioms. We believe that the results of this study will serve as a valuable reference for teachers and researchers in the future. |
