This study investigates the ''Box Cutter Counterattack'' incident as a case study and employs the multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) method to investigate how three newsrooms utilize user-generated content (UGC) to produce television news and assess their professional performance. The findings reveal that the three newsrooms tend to regard UGC as original sources and attribute the meaning of ''school violence'' from the perspective of either the school or the police. The MCDA analysis demonstrates that although the three newsrooms utilize the same UGC, they differ in film selection, articulation of signs, editing techniques, and narrative explanations, resulting in variations in the portrayal of violence. There is room for improvement in reporting the truth and minimizing harm by the newsrooms from the perspective of professional ethics. |
