This study focuses on challenges for general administration following university mergers by taking National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST)as an example. Through summarizing current approaches and conducting interviews, some conclusions and suggestions were made to serve as a future reference for university mergers. The conclusions are summarized as follows:(1) Issues arising from systematic and cultural differences: Faculty and students are still accustomed to the system used in the original campus, which causes difficulties in management following university mergers. With the establishment of integration goals, the existing university culture should be considered during the integration process to reduce the accompanying impact and further enhance organizational identification and the integration of office culture.(2) Administrative efficiency affected by multi-campus governance: NKUST has several campuses in scattered locations following university mergers, and it is time-consuming in terms of administrative management. By introducing a digitalized administrative process, both the transportation cost for university fleet as well as the document delivery time was reduced. Moreover, the General Administration Division was established to offer timely maintenance and venue management services, which also significantly improves efficiency. (3) Challenges in managing a university with a largescale: It is difficult to demonstrate administrative management efficiency across different campuses and a large-scale organization following university mergers. By implementing an intelligent management model over existing facilities in each campus, the operational efficiency within the organization can be effectively improved. |
