Ren Fang’s“Shu Yi Ji”was the representative work of natural object novels in the Southern dynasties. It recorded exotic objects for readers to identify and pandered readers’mindsets of hunting for bizarre things, which satisfying the author’s purpose of flexing his talents. In addition, the author quoted related literature or detailed the source in his writing, which enhanced the persuasiveness and credibility of the contents and became the characteristic of his writing. In particular, the readers of“Shu Yi Ji”were mostly intellectuals, and they shared similar levels of knowledge and self-cultivation. Therefore, it was appropriate to quote poems to shorten the distance between the work of the author and his readers. Also, the underlying meanings that Ren Fang intended to convey could be more understandable.“Shu Yi Ji”used poems to verify exotic things, and although it was a conscious act, it enhanced the sense of reality of the things it quoted. Also, it reduced the level of“exoticness”and alleviated readers’intranquil mindset. By using articles in the book and quoting poems, it elaborated the duty of seeking safety when facing challenges in troubled times as well as the alienated attitude under the threat of death. It not only corresponded to Ren Fang’s life experience and the connotation of the poems but also served as a basis or complement to verify its thought proposition. This work responded to the perception and experience of the Southern dynasties literati during that time, and expanded the range of influence and meanings of value of the work. |
