By discussing Cheng Chun-Ching 's (1951-) novels, “The Cry of the Black Area” (1985) and The Angry Mountain City Laborers (1989), this article argues that the bodies of the labor: On the one hand, they are forced to enter Lauren Berlant’s the biopolitics of slow death (2007); on the other hand, participating in the struggle to gain liveliness which embodies Judith Butler's vulnerability (2006). The laborers exposed their fragility during the time taking to the street protest, but they also got an opportunity to repair their broken self. In other words, this article wants to talk about how laborers make full use of industrial injury to get rid of slow death, enter liveliness, and demonstrate temporary subjective initiative. Finally, this article would like to place these two novels back into the history of laborers' literature and human rights literature, in order to reclaim the particularity of Cheng Chun-Ching 's writing. |
