The discovery of the five chapters related to Yi Yin伊尹(?-?) in the Bamboo Annals竹書紀年and the Tsinghua bamboo slips, whose records contradict those in Shiji史記, has resulted in a series of scholarly studies focusing on the reconstruction of Yi Yin's personality and image, including issues such as his background, role in attempting to overthrow the Xia dynasty, and self-proclaimed kingship. However, the loss of the chapters ''NüJiu''女鳩and ''NüFang''女房in Shangshu尚書has rendered scholars incapable of investigating both NüJiu (?-?) and NüFang (?-?), with whom Yi Yin met during his trips between the Xia and Shang dynasties while serving Jie桀and Tang湯, each for five times. The purpose of this article is to combine and compare the records in ''Chi jiu zhi ji Tang zhi wu''赤(鳥咎)之集湯之屋(''The Gathering of Red Turtle Doves on Tang's House'') and ''Yin zhi''尹至with the fragmentary evidence in passed down documents in order to unravel this mystery. Moreover, it is hoped that the current study can reveal the contexts and reasons behind the loss of ''NüJiu'' and ''NüFang.'' |
