The purpose of this study is to apply the space syntax method, establish a systematic road hierarchy identification program, and demonstrate its application on an actual road network. In current planning practices, road hierarchy is often determined based on traffic engineering perspectives, using indicators such as road width and traffic flow. However, this study takes a different approach by categorizing roads based on connections between road segments. To achieve this, the axial analysis of space syntax is used as a measurement tool. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, various test parameters are considered, including road network scales, measurement radii, axial line types, and measurement indicators. This leads to the formation of 24 parameter combinations, which are subsequently tested on a road network model based on the road network of Milton Keynes, UK. The objective is to understand how each combination performs in identifying road levels. The testing results are then analyzed empirically using the road network of the Phase 5 Readjustment Area in Anping, Tainan, which provides valuable insights. Specifically, the analysis successfully highlights low-level roads with high coherence and explores the effect of adding external weights in determining high-level roads. These results serve as a foundation for the selecting parameters and measurement indicators in subsequent research and offer a practical tool for evaluating the rationality of road network connections in planning processes. |
