Agent based modeling is an advanced data analysis technique in computational sociology. Although this technique first appeared in the 1940s, it just got attention in social science and public policy evaluation very recently. Many social science researchers in a few leading social science research centers, like the University of Chicago, have devoted their efforts to apply agent-based modeling to investigate social environments and society. With more public data becoming accessible, agent-based modeling is now not only used for simulations in the lab; it is also being integrated with the real world, yielding results that can reflect the evolution of reality. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to introduce the basic concepts of agent-based modeling and the application of agent-based modeling in social science research. This paper also uses education as an example to demonstrate how to conduct an agent-based modeling study. This paper concludes with some suggestions for the social science researchers in Taiwan. |
