This article aims to explore the “Science of Reading” Movement and its impact in the United States. It all started in 2018 when a podcast discussing American students’ reading achievement and American teachers’ instruction and strategies for teaching reading kicked off the “Science of Reading” Movement. The Movement emphasized that teachers should adopt teaching reading approaches supported by scientific research and evidence in order to effectively improve students’ reading ability and reading achievement. Although the Movement has rendered the state governments, teacher education institutions, and local school districts review current approaches and strategies of teaching reading as well as formulating new plans based on the Movement’s emphasis on scientific research, promoting the new plans was not easy with considerable difficulties and challenges. Even so, the “Science of Reading” Movement and its connotations are still worthy of learning and serve as an example for Taiwan’s English reading education. |
