The purpose of this action research project was to explore the process and results of a teacher educator promoting student teachers’ cooperative learning competency in a 2-credit elective course, “Cooperative Learning”. There were 67 students enrolled in this course. The data collected include teachers' observations and teaching notes in class, interviews, mid-term and final feedback questionnaires, student assignments, LINE and FB chat records. After analyzing the data, the conclusions are as follows: (1) The teacher educator promoted the cooperative learning competency of student teachers by combining theoretical discussions with students’ practical class experience, demonstrating the feasibility of implementing cooperative learning in class. (2) In the process of implementing cooperative learning, the teacher educator faced the problem of a large number of students taking the course, reducing the opportunities and frequency of student participation, and the classroom space was limited. Besides, due to Covid-19, the course was changed to online that physical class was no longer available. Some students had poor information technology equipment, which affected the quality of teaching and learning. (3) Student teachers have consciously increased their understanding, adopted a positive attitude, raised awareness and confidence in cooperative learning. They also felt that this course improved their communication and expression skills, expanded interpersonal relationships, and they expressed they would apply what they have learned in their future teaching. |
