This study aims to explore the “aesthetic principles for layout design” for textbooks. Through reviewing literature, first, the “aesthetic principles for layout design” was developed. Second, by utilizing content analysis and interview, to explore to what extent the “aesthetic principles for layout design” was applied in the textbooks and by the textbook designers. Third, according to the “aesthetic principles for layout design”, excellent design was selected and analyzed. In terms of the “aesthetic principles for layout design” of textbook, this research found that: (1) regardless of versions and fields, aesthetic principle “hierarchy” achieves the most in general; (2) the degree of conformity of the aesthetic principles in the Aesthetic textbooks is relatively high and average; (3) The performance of all versions of Mandarin textbooks is better than that of Social Studies; (4) Different versions and fields have different minimum aesthetic principles. In terms of interviewing textbook designers, it was found that all textbook designers agreed that the “aesthetic principles for layout design” proposed by this research were all very important, and the principles commonly used by textbook designers were summarized. Based on the above research results, three suggestions were proposed: (1) incorporating universal design into textbook layout design; (2) conducting long-term empirical studies of textbook design; (3) establishing aesthetic principles of textbook layout design that meet the needs of different learning fields. |
