With the introduction of the Internet, its use become almost inseparable in our daily lives. Also, with the rapidly changing characteristics of the Internet, more new language is emerging than ever before. Accordingly, the current research conducted a rhetorical analysis of the top ten popular terms on the Internet released in Taiwan and Mainland China in 2021, to understand the varying rhetorical uses of Internet catchphrases by netizens, their categories, similarities and differences. The research adopted the comparative research method proposed by Bereday, and the process consists of four steps: description, interpretation, juxtaposition, and comparison. The study revealed that in the rhetorical use of the top ten catchphrases by Taiwanese netizens, there were a total of 11 categories due to the twofold phenomenon. On the other hand, netizens in Mainland China had as many as 15 categories of rhetorical uses among the top ten catchphrases. The figures of speech commonly used by netizens on both sides of the Taiwan Strait consisted of four categories:“borrowing”,“punning”,“quoting”, and“omitting”. The differences included eleven categories such as“contraction”,“flip”etc. |
