Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, international travel has been restricted, which hinder implementation of on-site audit programs on imported food. In order to maintain the necessary food safety management, countries have adopted alternatives to on-site audit including document reviews and remote meetings, to evaluate the food safety and hygiene management of the exporting country’s officials and manufacturing plants. Remote audit needs to rely on the support of information and communication technology (ICT), and it cannot completely replace the on-site observation and examination by auditors. The pandemic has facilitated the application of remote audit. The international communities have been discussing and formulating relevant international standards. Moreover, with the development trend of the ICT, the expansion of the application level of remote audit in the future will be expected. As for the future development of practical applications among countries, it still depends on the condition of relevant resources, regulations and supporting measures in place. |
