The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted global economy, human health, and the globalization of the food supply system. The crisis made food regulatory authorities to re-examine and adjust border management strategies. In Taiwan, the border imported food inspection management monitored the outer packaging of frozen food, the possibility of COVID-19 virus being brought in through product transportation was assessed. At the same time, the protection measures for inspectors were strengthened, and information was updated in real time for public inquires. The adjustment of inspection administrative operations process and temporary measures included the staff diversion, reduction of the frequency for public service, and post-supplementation of documents, etc. The changes at the inspection system including comprehensive electronic application, scale-up the product categories of electronic reviewing, improved online operation process, promoted the use of e-certificates for customs clearance at the border, etc. Border management seems to be drifting towards a highly technological, digital and automatic to smart supervision. Through a rolling and flexible management strategy, in respond to international trends and to maintain the border inspection practices, to maintain the inspection and management needs of border imported food during the epidemic. |
