Introduction: Comics are a mass medium with a large readership and a powerful influence on the values and behavioral choices of individuals. In an era when graphic narrative and consumption are highly valued, it is of great importance and necessity to pay attention to and examine the media texts that receive high popularity. Methods: Taking Slam Dunk as the research object, the study adopted critical discourse analysis to explore how the comic represents the cultural image and role structure of female sports team managers and further clarified the gender ideology that lies within. Results: The media representation of female sports team managers in Slam Dunk are demonstrated through the following three role structures: admiring or adoring the players, providing assistance, and looking after the team, all of which manifest an unequal social division of labor based on gender and create a stereotype of women’s work. Conclusions: Through the lens of critical discourse, readers and audiences could tell the prejudice in certain deep-rooted cultural phenomena, identify the connotation of gender politics behind media representation, and hence improve media literacy and judgement. |
