The incident of Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation (Konfrontasi) had brought a great impact to Sarawak Leftist political movement. The Sarawak main communist organization, Sarawak Liberation league (SSL) seized the opportunities crossing the border, moved to Indonesian Kalimantan to build up guerrilla force. This is an unusual event in the history of Malaysia leftist political party. Though SSL had no official connection to Indonesia Communist Party (PKI) or Army, owed to SSL’s initiative and the boundary between Sarawak and Indonesia, the decision to turn into armed insurgency was made immediately after the Brunei Revolt. However, SSL members were mostly Chinese, and it complicated the scenario while receiving military training and assistance from the Indonesian army and the ministry of foreign affairs. |
