Discourses on the hopes and expectations of Vietnamese brides constitute crucial elements in respect to the Taiwan-Vietnam cross-border marriage debate. This paper examines the social implications of recent state policies in both Taiwan and Vietnam in their attempts to invade domestic life and to manipulate the reproduction of the Vietnam women concerned. By exploring the logic of official discourses and policies, I argue here, that the power of the State over the marriage politics in both Taiwan and Vietnam, has depended upon the management of national crises to legitimate the interventions of the governments in both countries. |
