This study takes the newspapers in Shanghai during 1850 to 1911 as the research object, carries out analysis on the layout editing and formation elements, thus to probe into the change of newspapers formation in early days and concludes the relevance and features therein upon the layout elements. The study found that: (I) newspapers in early modern times, under the mutual collision between western culture and local culture, were presented as book-form newspaper, small-sized modern-time newspaper and modern-time newspaper. The book-form newspapers were mostly having noticeable feature as fish-tail shaping, which were mostly applied in the type area of the fore-edge margin for layout decoration and key points prompting. (II) The small-sized modern-time newspaper, the complex of ancient books and Western newspapers, was the embryo of modern newspapers in China. As the aesthetic standards of Shanghai citizens had changed, as of the early 20th century, the newspaper layout edition approached to modern newspapers with significant change in layout. (III) The layout editing during this period included items such as layout chase, column number, mode of arrangement, typeface, prompting items, etc.. There are continuous innovation in newspaper layout along with the time and introduction of Western advanced editing concepts and technology. |
