This study aims to investigate elementary school natural science teachers’perceptions on core competencies, teaching predicaments and assistance needs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. The research results are as follows: 1. Except for those who had participated in workshop activities, most natural science teachers indicated little knowledge of curriculum objectives. 2. With respect to core competencies, though the teachers interviewed advocated the vision of core competencies defined in the new Curriculum Guidelines, doubts were expressed about the clarity of the definition of competencies or core competencies. Such confusion in turn contributed to an insufficient understanding of the content of core competencies among some teachers. 3. The majority of teachers reported facing predicaments in such areas as teaching material selection, curriculum design, and assessment when implementing core competencies in their teaching. 4. To implement core competencies in teaching, teachers needed assistance in the following aspects: enhancing the content of workshop activities and provision of hands-on programs; increasing the frequency of demonstration teaching and classroom observation; increasing opportunities for collaborative lesson preparation; expanding exchanges and cooperation with teachers from other schools; using network platforms to publicize core competency-related information and teaching demonstration videos. |
