"The development of globalization involves new spatial-temporal relations, governance structure and institutional changes, challenging local citizenship and value systems. In the process of international business, globalization had great influence on democracy in Taiwan. As a result, democratic education has become much more significant to students in facing future global society. By using literature analysis, researcher first explored the theories and contexts of democratic education. Secondly, social and political situation were reviewed in order to analyze the main challenges of democracy in Taiwan. Finally, researcher proposed several possible suggestions. The results of this study showed that democracy in Taiwan is facing challenges including the advent of risk society, the crisis of regional integration and geopolitics, and the trend of populism. Therefore, teachers should not only emphasize on inter-disciplinary issues, international understanding and action, but also apply deliberate pedagogy in democratic education. Confronting with the transformation in the future, it is insightful to equip students with democratic competency consists of sufficient knowledge, attitude, and skills." |
