This study used oral historical interviews and literature analysis methods to investigate the origin of the Mazu belief in the Tainhougong of Chengguangao, Chenggong Township, Taitung County. From 2014 to 2016, the research team interviewed several local elders in Chenggong Township, including volunteer worker, deputy commissioners of the temple, and elders who provided commentary materials. After sorted out the interview results and analyzed related documents, we had found the origin of the Mazu belief was constantly being changed and re-constructed. We provided different opinions about that and tried to unravel the construction of the Mazu belief in the Tainhougong, Chenggong Township. It could be a common reality that in case of the folk religion or a temple had a very long history, it was impossible to provide reliable documents or relics, then people would use their own ways to construct the legend of their beliefs. |
