After the curriculum guideline of high school was amended in 2010, there is a rule for high school Chinese textbooks: ''Textbooks have to select one lesson about modern poetry in each volume.'' To investigate the condition of modern poetry in the textbooks, this article surveys what poetry that was selected and compiled by five publishing houses under this rule. Through examination and analysis, the poet and poetry that were selected are not representational. Or they cannot reflect the background of the development of literature. And we did not read any poetry written in local mother tongues nor any written for social and political purposes. The compilation of poetry in volume one to six doesn’t really conform to historical contexts. The poetry also was not compiled by themes. Moreover, one failed to explain the connotation and significance of poetry when the themes were about local, female, form, etc. This study proposed to increase selections of the poetry and take the representativeness of poetry into account, in order to show the development and multiple aspects of the modern poetry in Taiwan; the editors of the textbooks have to consider the consistency of the compilation and explain the significance of each period or theme of the poetry to help teachers and students understand and appreciate the poetry. |
