Mr. Jiang Weiqiao is a noted lay Buddhist in Republican Chinese Buddhist circle. He was born in Changzhou but spent most of his time in Shanghai. He maintained very close relations with Buddhist circles in Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai. This article explores his Buddhism-related activities while he served in the Ministry of Education in Beijing between 1916 and 1922. Based on his personal diary published in November 2014, this article examines the following aspects and constructs a clearly portrait of Jiang's Buddhist activities in the aforementioned time frame: Jiang Weiqiao's association with Buddhist associates in Beijing; his participation in the preaching of Buddhist sutras; his reading and chanting of Buddhist canons; and his comprehension of other religious studies. An overall view of is life leads us to understand his deep devotion to Buddhist thoughts, especially the five years he spent in Beijing, when he engaged in thorough investigation of Buddhist sutras and making various Buddhist companions. He was a person truly capable of practicing Buddhism and incorporating it into his daily life. Jiang Weiqiao can be regarded as a role model in modern Chinese Buddhism. |
