Dehua Hall in Tainan is a private temple in which a great number of woodblock prints made during the Ming and Qing Dynasties are currently preserved. In December 2017, the author worked as the co-principal investigator of its census and registration program. During January and February 2020 the author examined a large number of valuable Buddhist texts that are also preserved in this place. This article describes some of the results of this work. The first priority was categorization of eight Taiwanese publishing companies and 46 printed works, plus an additional 30 publishing companies and 64 printed works from five provinces in China. These works document the collecting priorities of Dehua Hall over the years. Not only does the collection give examples of the use of engraved cultural heritage documents but it allows researchers to compare the collections with similar collections in other countries around the world for scholarly research and verification. The old account books kept by the temple were also examined, together with relevant background anecdotes from novel“Yue Di Miao Qian”(Yue Di Temple Front) by Meng-Lin Tsai Hu. Finally, by citing background documents concerning different peoples’donations it is hoped to restore the true history of Taiwan’s publishing. |
