The first agricultural granary of Taiwan subsidized by Taiwan Governor-General Office was built in 1922. 134 agricultural granary buildings were constructed till 1942. Including other rice granaries managed and operated by the Taiwan's Cooperative Association, there are total 304 granaries during the Japanese colonial period. In the past, these historical granary buildings ensure the quality of rice of Taiwan to export to Japan. In recent years, many of these granaries were collapsed or demolished due to the need of urban development. Within these 304 granaries, merely 11 remain and have the identity of conservation according to Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, and a few of these are reserved or reused by The Farmers' Association. Comparing to the quantity of granaries located in Taiwan everywhere, the research literatures regarding granary are still largely unknown and uninvestigated. The purpose of this article is expected to provide the discussion of issues on current difficulties of conservation and investigation for historical granaries by reviewed previous studies and hope can reveal the future research topics. |
