Construction and maintenance records are surely valuable and useful during the process of restoration of historic sites and historic buildings. Two restoration cases of former camphor refineries are given as examples in this article. One is the Nanmon Factory of Monopoly Bureau of Government-General of Taiwan, now known as national-assigned historic site Taipei Camphor Refinery, and the other is the Factory of Japan Camphor Company, Taihoku Branch, now known as the Red Brick District of Huashan Culture Park. The author discusses the explorations, types, condition, and reference value of construction and maintenance records. Moreover, the author describes their application and limitations at different stages of restoration, such as background research, planning, physical design, and construction. |
