This essay is part of the study on architecture of the Taipei Machinery Bureau, which was built in the Qing Dynasty and turned to be the Taipei Artillery Factory and the Railway workshop during the Japanese colonial period. The author studies many historical documents regarding this topic, including archives of Taiwan Railway Shipai warehouse preserved by the National Archives Administration, Taiwan Soutokufu Archives kept by Taiwan Historica, publication relating to railway affairs during Japanese colonial period, and news reports by Taiwan Daily News. By comparing and contrasting various types of records such as documents, photos, and maps from Taiwan Soutokufu, War Management Office, Taiwan Railway Authority, Research Center of Japan Defense Agency, and newspaper archives, the author sketches the outline of facility, background, land acquisition and transfer of Taipei Artillery Factory during the Japanese colonial period, and tries to draw a comparative reference between these historical data as well as their historical value. |
