The author argues that the role of a national historical museum is not only a tool for promoting nation prestige or pursuing a sense of national identification. It should take the culture relics as the substantial evidences to achieve the goal of respecting multiple races, cultures, and different viewpoints. Accordingly, collection, preservation management culture relics are the most essential and fundamental work in the museum. The National Museum of Taiwan History is the only national institution responsible for collecting Taiwan's historical documents and culture relics in Taiwan. Besides, it also performs functions such as exhibition, education and promotion of Taiwan's culture and history. At present, the National Museum of Taiwan History has approximately 40,000 items in its collection, with subjects on life of ordinary people, history of interaction between ethnic groups, and the development of Taiwan history. The important historical documents in its collection include Taiwan's ancient maps, Foreign Language Books, Japanese books, old photographs, and old postcards,... etc; in addition, the important collections of culture relics contain the utensils used in life of ordinary people, agricultural tools and materials, tools and products of various crafts, and culture relics from different religions and customs. Moreover, the National Museum of Taiwan History also aims to collect the culture relics of important contemporary historical events and pop culture in Taiwan. |
