From 1946 to 1969, General de Gaulle established the foundation of the coalition of French right wing parties. In this respect, 1958 is a watershed. Before 1958, de Gaulle's RPF aimed at forming a majority government and rewriting the constitution. After 1958, the UNR tried to create a broad electoral base from the right to the left-center. When this effort failed, de Gaulle stepped down in 1969. |
