Teeth whitening products are favored by customers in recent years, and these products, containing hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, are regulated as specific purpose cosmetics based on Cosmetic Hygiene and Safety Act. To ensure the safety of the teeth whitening products, 27 samples were collected (10 domestic products and 17 imported ones) by local health bureaus from agents, importers, and manufacturers. 10 samples were purchased randomly from the online shops by Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) from February to October in 2019. These products were tested according to United States Pharmacopoeia and Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The results of 27 commercial teeth whitening products showed that 8 samples failed to comply with regulation, 6 samples did not meet the requirements for active content, and 2 samples containing hydrogen peroxide were not officially licensed and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide exceeded the limit of 6%. All samples found violative were sent to related administrative authorities for penalties. |
