Under the rule of Japan, Taiwan underwent some profound and sophisticated transformations. In terms of the cultural landscape, Japanese and Chinese bookshops existed simultaneously which resulted in the keen competition in the fields of knowledge. Affected by such multiple factors, the public's taste in reading in Taiwan was cultivated and nourished in diverse aspects. This paper is to conduct positive research on the bookshops in the Tainan Prefecture area, which covered today's Tainan City, Tainan County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County and southern Yunlin County, during the Japanese colonial period. Chinese bookshops at that time played a substantial part in both the business and cultural domains. Besides the chronological background description of the establishment, development and sustenance of bookshops, this paper also discusses from a synchronic viewpoint on the change of Chinese knowledge concept that was influenced by the business operation of Chinese bookshops and the books they sold. |
