According to World Health Organization, physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Thus, developing effective strategies for promoting physical activity would be a public health priority. Active transportation has been recognized as a promising way for adults to engage in sufficient physical activity in daily life. This study aimed to describe the associations of active transportation with physical activity and health outcome in adults using literature review. The results show that active transportation is associated with increased levels of physical activity and lower risks of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, certain type of cancer and all-cause mortality. These results may provide critical implications for policy makers and intervention designers that for the initiatives of physical activity promotion and disease prevention, there is an urgent need to better understand transport-related behavior in adults for developing effective strategies to promote active transportation in Taiwanese adults. |
