A Study on Color Words in Taiwanese Min-Nan Dictionaries

探討臺灣閩南語辭書中色彩詞之表現，分析樣本總計有11本辭書。研究結果可分為「描述色相之色彩詞」、「描述不同類別之用詞」、「描述疊詞之用詞」三種類型，依序為：1. 「描述色相之色彩詞」是以慣用色名為多，總計有3,041句。2. 「描述不同類別之用詞」可區分為17種分類，「烏」字群數最高（345句），「金」字根最少（72句）；字群數以「動植物」為最多（298句），「交通娛樂」（15句），總計為1,517句。3. 「描述疊詞之用詞」數量以「烏」最高；疊詞形式計有ABAB、ABB、AAB、AA、AAA等用法來傳達色彩意象。此研究發現可提供色彩文化研究之參考。

This study explores how colors are described in Minnan language dictionaries available in Taiwan, with eleven dictionaries being sampled. Based on the research findings, the expressions of colors can be categorized according to three aspects: terms to describe hue, terms to describe different types and terms to describe things containing replications. The first type consists of conventional color names, with up to 3041 sentences containing such names. The second type can be sub-categorized into seventeen groups, among which, terms containing characters with the root of “black” take up the largest share (345 sentences), while those with the root of “golden” has the smallest share (with only 72 sentences). From the perspective of word clusters, “flora and fauna” type has the largest share with 298 sentences, while “traffic and entertainment” type has the smallest share with only 15 sentences. Sentences with word clusters totaled 1,517. As for terms with replications, terms used to describe “black” constitute the largest part. Reduplication patterns include ABAB, ABB, AAB, AA, AAA, etc. The findings of this research can serve as a reference for future research on the cultural interpretations of colors.
