While Australia, Indonesia and East Timor are geographically close to each other, they are actually very different, to the point that they are cast as ''Western'' versus ''Non-Western'' countries. Still, in consideration of Australia's geo-strategy, interactions among the three countries have significant implications on each other's interests. Australia, Indonesia and East Timor have common, mutual and reciprocal interests in issues such as regional security and economic development, as cases in modern history--East Timor Independence Movement, Asia-Pacific regional security, asylum seeker issue, oil field development, and etc--have shown. And these cases provide insights into Australia's policy towards Indonesia and East Timor. |
