The present study aims at exploring the gender representation of English textbooks in senior high school. The targeted materials for analysis were taken from Book One to Book Six in Sanmin version. The methodology adopted for the present study was content analysis. Gender representation was investigated from five aspects: characters and frequency, social roles, domestic roles, order of appearance, and pictorial representation. The findings are as follows: (1) in characters and frequency, the number of male characters is a lot higher than that of female characters, and so is the frequency of mention, (2) in social roles, the roles performed by males are of greater variety than those by females, (3) in domestic roles, neither genders play domestic roles, (4) in order of appearance, a conventional expression in English language is adopted, namely, male before female, and (5) in pictorial representation, the ratio of male characters to female remains relatively high. To sum up, suggestions for further studies are provided for the production and practice of textbooks in terms of temporal and spatial backgrounds. |
