The Circle and Weber's Law

Along the dimension of area of circles. the jnds were obtained by the three-category constant method_ The standard stimuli consisted of the circles of 1.5, 2, 4, and 8 cm in diameter_ Children made judgments at a 2-m distance from the standard and variable stimuli. The obtained function connecting ΔS and S is similar to those found in the cases of simple sense modalities. Experiments on judgments of area in determining the Weber fraction have been done early (McCrea & Pritchard, 1897; Woodworth & Thorndike, 1900). However, McCrea and Pritchard used only two Ss, and Woodworth and Thorndike only three Ss in their experiments. Because of the scarcity of data in this field, an attempt was made in the present experiment to collect data from a large number of Ss.
