The jnds were obtained by the three-category constant method along the dimension of varying magnitudes of angles. The standard stimuli consisted of the angles of 5°, 10°, 15°, 30°, 60°, and 120°, formed by two lines of equal length of 4 cm. It was found that the Weber fraction decreases rapidly at first and then remains fairly constant over the rest of the stimulus dimension. The results are similar to those obtained in simple sense modalities. Working mainly on the discrimination of hefted weights, E. H. Weber in 1834 observed that one stimulus could be judged different from another if it were approximately one-thirtieth greater or lesser than the standard. This ratio appeared to be independent of the absolute :magnitude for which discriminations were obtained. |
