In Chang Yan-Yuan's book The Famous Paintings Through the Ages《歷代名畫記》, “Yi zai bi xian 意在筆先” first appeared as a terminology of the theories of Chinese Painting. From then on, the idea of “Yi zai bi xian ” was also continuously being applied in the later theories. However, the meanings of “Yi zai bi xian” had not only being interpreted differently, but also been shown in different words or orders of words. Generally speaking,“Yi zai bi xian ” means the ideas or images of painting appearing in painter's mind before painting being started. Howeve there exist other interpretations for this term. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to discuss about how “Yi zai bi xian” is applied and interpreted in accordance with different themes, such as landscapes, bamboo, plum blossom, horse, human figures, and so on. Furthermore, afterit was referred in The Famous Paintings Through the Ages, the variation in the interpretations in different historical periods will be discussed. |
