Suicide is the second-highest cause of death within the age group of 15-24 years old, which happens most frequently among college students. Under the condition that courses and lecturers in the field of life education are not common, it is worthy to consider integrating life education into courses related to classic novels as a mean to encourage students to contemplate the meaning of life. This study introduced life education into a course on reading “Outlaws of the Marsh” in a medical university. The lecturer of the course, who is also a clinical psychologist in a student counseling center, led discussions with 39 participating students in the first four sessions of the course. Through analyzing students' reflective journals, students improved on eight dimensions: 1. cherishing life and seizing every moment; 2. promoting spiritual wisdom; 3. elevating ethical thinking; 4. enhancing self-cultivation; 5. facing personal drawbacks; 6. extending ability of empathy; 7. learning to solve interpersonal conflicts; 8. increasing concepts on gender equity. Under proper guidance, classic novels could become a mean to provide enlightenment towards issues in life education, and at the same time emphasizing modern values. Since college faculty members are expected to bear the role of advisors and mentors, they should therefore devote themselves to the cultivation of integrated personality among our next generation. |
