Before 1999, Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra was often mistaken for Jazz Suite No. 2. This paper starts with the historic background of these two works and discusses reasons of this confusion. The compositional style of Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra differs from Shostakovich’s more typical works, which are more serious in tone. This work is easier to understand and more widely accepted by the general public. Considering the difficulty for organizing a full orchestral concert for live performance, Johan de Meij (b. 1953) created an arrangement version using only wind instruments. The effect of this arrangement is rather close to its original edition, so it is presently the most performed version. In addition to comparing the difference in instrumentation, the author also discusses, movement by movement, how conductors can interpret the arrangement for wind band so that the effect and spirit of the original orchestral version can be approached. |
