Taipei and Kaohsiung had their institutional reform, upgraded to special municipalities, in 2010. The change of population, fiscal revenue and expenditure, and other factors would have significant impact on their economic development. The paper analyzes economic data of both cities from 1998 to 2013 and adopts T-test to examine economic development variables. It finds that Taipei and Kaohsiung have significant differences among industrialization, urbanization, governmental expenditure, labor population and foreign direct investment prior to and post 2010. The differences and changes among industrialization, urbanization, governmental expenditure and labor population are discussed. Finally, according to these findings, suggestions are provided in the paper for Taipei and Kaohsiung municipal governments based on the differences among their economic development variables to promote local economic development. |
