The travel writings of Master Shengyen of Dharma Drum Mountain have a clear style of using simple and plain language but with boundless implication which originated from the classical characteristic of the most of his works. This characteristic shows the depth of Master Shengyen’s travel writings, in addition also demonstrates a historical reflection between the travel writings of ancient monks. To probe further into the topic, this kind of classical characteristic derives from the following three factors: First, the places he visited in his journey already have rich of its own history, local legends and anecdotes of the people concerned with, which inevitably become the foundation of the classical characteristic in the first stage of his writings. Second, Master Shengyen views his traveling as religious preach, therefore he exhaustively describes his journey to the last detail, assisting his narration with many pictures. On the other hand, Master Shengyen also views his writing as the journey of life, therefore combines closely his writing with his own wide and profound knowledge. Third, he quotes large amounts of Buddhist sutras and secular documents in his writings, it creates a specified mode of vocabulary and enhancing the classical characteristic of his writings. This characteristic moreover strengthens the link between Master Shengyen and ancient monks, revealing the particularity of indication between modern and ancient, inter-reflection on characteristics and inspiration of minds. |
