This paper seeks to explore the pattern Tung Chun-shu constructs his system of Harmony of Heaven and Man (tien ren ho i), the texts presenting this system, the background, the developmental pattern, the underlying principles, and the factual and fictitious aspects of this system are analyzed herein. Though the system has some logical fallicious, it may reveal some philosophical significance, which are to be analysed. This paper then looks into the content of the system, examines the ambiguity of the key terms tien, ren, ho, and i and the confusion brought about by the ambiguity, and points out the difficulties in comprehending the system. The twofold features and the contribution of the system are rendered as the conclusion. |
