This article discusses the usage of “substitution” in Lao Tzu. It is noticed that there are special meanings in the presence of words like “here (此)”, “one (一)” and nature (自然) in Lao Tzu. Wang Bi was the first scholar who mentioned this observation. Through his argument, we further observe that the usage of“substitution” in the context of Lao Tzu has some indexical expressions. It is found that the words “here (此)”, “one (一)” and “nature(自然)” in the text may enable its readers to use their own experiences to interpret the content of Lao Tzu. Through this mechanism, the state of “the fusion of horizons” between the thoughts of Lao Tzu and the minds of the readers can be reached. |
